Different from the early 90s typical multifx units. Strives for controlling or accounting for various specific parameters of amp emulation (power tube, output transformer, guitar speaker, cabinet, and mic), not just speaker simulation. Doesn't go into the level of amp-emulation detail of the ADA Ampulator, but is miles ahead of more typical preamp/multifx processors such as the DigiTech 2120 with "programmable speaker simulator" which has little more than two settings: on or off.
Strives for total tube-amp emulation, not just "speaker simulation", breaks out of the mere, so-called "preamp" league -- which says "pre" "amp", which means *not* amp-like.
Might have a badly needed feature, pre-distortion eq.

>The Tom Scholtz Rockman also does a lot of eq tricks.
What sort? This intelligent design seems to have been carried over into all of the Rocktron products.

http://www.rocktron.com/grt/austin.html - Brush the dust off your boots and get ready to plug into one awesome Overdrive pedal as the Austin Gold joins Rocktron's pedal family. A superb blend of light overdrive that enhances, without changing, the sound of your favorite amp. Unique to the Austin Gold is its "Pre-Bass" control... eliminates problems with too much "fuzzy" bass, or the opposite problem of being a weak and thin sounding overdrive. With the Pre-Bass control, many overdrive textures can be exploited. It's almost like having an entire arsenal of various overdrive pedals in one, by simply adjusting one control! With its simple control layout of "Drive", "Pre-Bass" and "Level", the Austin Gold is very simple to use. By adding a maximum of 30dB of gain, it will not overprocess, but instead will add an entirely new dimension to your amp setup! Review.
I assume that as of Nov. 1998, the Rocktron Prophecy has the coolest amp-tone related features of all the Rocktron line. official product page - excerpts:
The Prophesy Programmable Digital / Tube Guitar Preamp with assignable effects. 4 preamp channels: Clean American, Texas Blues, Vintage British and Mega Drive, each with their own distinct "voicing's" to provide a vast array of tube amp sounds to the player. Each channel has its own basic gain and master controls with bass, mid, treble and presence controls, all easily accessible with knobs, just like a regular amp head. Every Prophesy preset offers a parametric pre-EQ (just before the preamp stage), a parametric post-EQ, and a parametric global EQ which effects all presets at the same time, which is useful for adjusting the over-all tone in different environments. The pre-effects section features wah, compression, Hush, EQ, and an assignable pre-effect of your choice [awesome - you can do eq and phaser before distortion]. The highly-configurable post-effects section provides ultra-transparent, high quality effects which completely preserve the tone of the preamp—thick reverbs and lush choruses can be used without coloring the sound of the preamp's tone [however they will still trash power tube saturation, if placed before a tube amp -- however... you should be able to put a tube amp in the fx loop, before the time-fx]. Four assignable "effect blocks" allow you to assign 1 pre preamp effect and 3 post preamp effects in any order you choose, including phaser, flanger, chorus, pitch shift, rotary speaker, delay and ADSR! Advanced mixer functions allow you to direct the desired amount of direct and effect sound through each block. Tremolo and reverb are fixed at the end of the chain where they belong and the tremolo can be placed pre or post reverb. The stereo effect loop may be assigned as an "effect" in the pre-effect block or any of the 3 post-effect blocks - this means that any other outboard effect unit can also be placed anywhere in the effect chain!!! Visual representation of the assigned effects signal chain, preset title, the voicing (channel) being used, all displayed on the first pres et page. The buttons in the 16 button matrix show the status (in or out) of the fixed effects as well as some of the assignable effects and allow you to instantly jump to those effects' parameter pages. Feature that Rocktron processors are well known for, such as glitch-free preset switching with no signal drop out or lag time and natural sounding effects. The 4 voicing's, or digital "amp channel" algorithms produce Rocktron's latest and state-of-the-art distortion tones which are very "tube amp like" in their feel and dynamics. The low end jumps out of the cabinet and the feel on the fret board is just like playing through your favorite tube amp head!
- An assignable effect loop
- True delay spillover which allows delay tails to continue after switching to a new preset and delay time
- A bypassable preamp section (which allows you to use the Prophesy as a stand-alone effect unit with the possibility of placing effects in your amp head before the input and in the effect loop)
- Assignable order of effects
- Stereo XLR Recording outputs with adjustable speaker simulation (may be used with the stereo 1/4" amp outputs without speaker simulation simultaneously in stereo)
